West Hempstead High School: The Pride of a Local Community

US News and World Report rank West Hempstead High School (WHHS) at 311 out of the 2,053 High Schools in New York state. The Long Island, Nassau County school serves over 612 students that include 73 percent are minorities. An 11:1 student, teacher ratio plays a vital role in the learning institution achieving a top 50 percent High School in the state.

Among the measurements used to determine WHHS success are the 75 percent Mathematics and 95 percent Reading Proficiencies scores it receives in the 2022 rankings. These achievements helped give the school an overall score of 81.54 and a graduation rate of 97 percent.

WHHS is the only High School in the West Hempstead School District. From selected students’ involvement in mentorship programs to their participation in marching bands, the school maintains a strong presence in the community.

The school’s mascot is “Rams,” and the colors are “Black” and “Gold.” Some sports activities at the school are Basketball, Football, Soccer, Baseball, Volleyball, Swimming, Tennis, and Lacrosse. According to the school’s website, the National Federation of State High School Associations recognized the athletic department “as a school of excellence for the exemplary display of sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity.”

One teacher sums up WHHS best by saying, “Teaching at West Hempstead High School is so much more than a “job.” Since I started here in September, I’ve been taken in as part of a family of teachers and students. When things happen in the community, good or bad, students and teachers come together in [a powerful way].”
